Overview
Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon (1552-1615) was a Japanese Catholic daimyo (feudal lord) who exemplified heroic Christian witness during Japan's tumultuous Christian century. Born into a samurai family, he was baptized at age 12 along with his father after the evangelization efforts of Jesuit missionaries. As a powerful regional lord, he used his position to support the spread of Christianity, building churches and protecting missionaries. Despite his military prowess and political influence, he consistently chose his faith over worldly power, accepting demotion and eventually exile rather than renouncing Christianity. When the Tokugawa shogunate banned Christianity in 1614, he led a group of 300 Japanese Christians into exile in Manila, where he died shortly after arrival. His life demonstrated the perfect integration of samurai values of loyalty and sacrifice with Christian faith, earning him the title "Samurai of Christ."
