St. Christopher

St. Christopher

Overview

St. Christopher (Greek: Χριστόφορος, "Christ-bearer") is one of Christianity's most popular saints, despite the historical uncertainty surrounding his life. According to tradition, he was a giant of extraordinary strength who sought to serve the most powerful king in the world. After serving various rulers and even the devil, he met a hermit who introduced him to Christ. The hermit suggested that Christopher could serve Christ by helping travelers cross a dangerous river. One day, a child asked to be carried across. As Christopher carried him, the child became increasingly heavy, nearly overwhelming the giant's strength. The child revealed himself as Christ, carrying the weight of the world. This legendary encounter gave Christopher his name, "Bearer of Christ," and established his patronage of travelers. Historical records suggest he was martyred in Lycia (modern-day Turkey) during the reign of Emperor Decius (c. 251 AD). While removed from the Universal Roman Calendar in 1969 due to historical uncertainty, his cult remains authorized for local veneration, and his popularity as a patron saint continues undiminished.
