St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was one of the most influential figures of the 12th century and a Doctor of the Church. Born into nobility in Burgundy, he entered the monastery of Cîteaux at age 22, bringing thirty companions with him. Soon after, he founded the Abbey of Clairvaux, which became the center of the Cistercian reform. Known as the "Mellifluous Doctor" for his eloquent preaching and writing, he was a gifted spiritual writer, mystic, and ecclesiastical statesman. He wrote extensively on the love of God, Marian devotion, and monastic spirituality. Despite preferring contemplation, he was drawn into ecclesiastical and political affairs, preaching the Second Crusade and combating heresy.
