St. Clare of Assisi (1194-1253) was the first female follower of St. Francis and foundress of the Poor Ladies, now known as the Poor Clares. Born into a noble family in Assisi, she was moved by Francis's preaching on evangelical poverty and secretly left her home at age 18 to join his movement. On Palm Sunday 1212, she received the habit from Francis at the Portiuncula and established a community of contemplative women at San Damiano.
