Overview
St. Dymphna (also known as Dimpna) was born in 7th century Ireland to a pagan king and Christian mother. After her mother's death, her father's grief turned to mental illness, and he developed an unhealthy obsession with Dymphna due to her resemblance to her mother. To escape his incestuous advances, she fled to Geel, Belgium, with her confessor, Fr. Gerebernus. There she established a hospice for the poor and sick. Her father eventually tracked her down and, when she refused his advances, beheaded her. The town of Geel became a sanctuary for the mentally ill, pioneering community-based care that continues to this day.
