St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) was born into Hungarian royalty and married Ludwig IV of Thuringia at age 14. Despite her high position, she led a life of extraordinary charity and simplicity. She established hospitals, personally cared for the sick and poor, and gave away royal resources to help those in need. After her husband's death on crusade when she was 20, she was expelled from the court but remained devoted to serving the poor. She joined the Third Order of St. Francis and founded a hospital where she herself served the sick. Her short life was marked by complete dedication to God and extraordinary love for the poor, making her one of the greatest examples of Christian charity in history.
