St. Giuseppe Moscati

St. Giuseppe Moscati

Overview

St. Giuseppe Moscati (1880-1927) was a pioneering Italian physician, research scientist, and university professor who demonstrated that faith and science could work in perfect harmony. Born in Benevento, Italy, to an aristocratic family, he chose medicine as his vocation after witnessing the care given to his brother who was injured in a military accident. As director of the Hospital for Incurables in Naples, he revolutionized patient care by treating the whole person - body, mind, and soul. He was known for his brilliant diagnoses, innovative research in biochemistry, and treating poor patients free of charge, often providing them with money for medicine. During the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the 1911 cholera epidemic, he distinguished himself by his heroic care for the sick and dying. He attended Mass daily and saw his medical practice as a form of priestly ministry, integrating prayer with his medical treatments and encouraging his patients to receive the sacraments.

Dear St. Giuseppe Moscati, holy physician and faithful servant of God, you who treated your patients with the grace of God and the science of medicine, hear our plea for help. In your earthly life, you united prayer and medicine, seeing Christ in every patient, especially the poor. Help us to be generous with our talents, to be tireless in our care for the sick, and to see God's presence in those who suffer. Obtain for us the grace to practice medicine with the same dedication and love that you showed, always putting our faith in God's healing power. Through your intercession, may we grow in faith, hope, and love as we serve those entrusted to our care. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
