St. Joan of Arc (1412-1431), known as "La Pucelle d'Orléans" (The Maid of Orléans), was a peasant girl whose divine visions and military leadership changed the course of French history. Born in Domrémy to pious farmers, she began receiving visions of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret at age 13. These heavenly voices instructed her to help the uncrowned King Charles VII reclaim France from English control during the Hundred Years' War. Despite her youth and gender, she convinced the royal court of her divine mission, was given command of an army, and led successful military campaigns, including the pivotal liberation of Orléans. Her greatest achievement was enabling Charles VII's coronation at Reims in 1429. Captured by Burgundian allies of the English in 1430, she was tried for heresy in a politically motivated ecclesiastical court. Throughout her imprisonment and trial, she demonstrated remarkable courage, wisdom, and fidelity to her faith. Though burned at the stake as a heretic at age 19, her conviction was posthumously overturned in 1456. Her example of faith, courage, and patriotism has inspired countless people across centuries.
