Overview
St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar who demonstrated how modern technology and ancient faith could combine in the service of evangelization. As a child, he experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary offering him two crowns - white for purity and red for martyrdom - both of which he accepted. He founded the Militia Immaculatae (Knights of the Immaculate) movement and established monasteries in Poland and Japan, including Niepokalanów, which became a major Catholic publishing center. Despite suffering from tuberculosis, he built the largest Catholic monastery in the world at the time, using modern printing technology to spread the Gospel and Marian devotion. After Nazi Germany invaded Poland, he was arrested and eventually sent to Auschwitz. There, in July 1941, when ten men were condemned to death by starvation in reprisal for a prison escape, he volunteered to take the place of Franciszek Gajowniczek, a father of two. After two weeks of starvation, dehydration, and neglect in the death cell, he was the last survivor and was finally killed by lethal injection on August 14, 1941. His martyrdom became a powerful symbol of Christian charity and resistance to evil.
