Born in Thagaste, North Africa (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria) to Christian parents, she was married young to a pagan official named Patricius, whose volatile temper and infidelities she endured with patience and kindness, eventually winning him to Christianity. However, her greatest trial and triumph concerned her brilliant but wayward son Augustine. For 17 years, she followed him from Africa to Rome and Milan, praying constantly for his conversion. Her tears of intercession became legendary, prompting a bishop to console her, "It is impossible that the son of such tears should perish." Her prayers were finally answered when Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387. She died shortly after at Ostia, having told Augustine, "Nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now left for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled." Her story, preserved in Augustine's "Confessions," has inspired generations of parents praying for their children's return to faith.
